After Care

Post Bris Care Instructions

Introduction:

Before you start to get too nervous about these instructions let me assure you, if you were to forget everything you are about to read, the Bris will still heal perfectly. Using basic common sense (i.e. change diaper normally, no rough rubbing on the wound site etc.) is all that is needed.

Having said this, let me give you an idea of what happens in the days after the Bris of your child, what you might expect to see, and what you as a parent/care giver would be expected to do.

Day of the Bris:

Change diapers frequently so the Bris area stays clean. At every diaper change, apply Vaseline on the front side of the diaper to avoid bandage from sticking to the diaper.  Don’t give baby a bath yet.

Day after the Bris:

I will come to your home to check on baby and address all your questions/concerns. A white/yellow granulation is beginning to form in the Bris area. This is not puss; it is 100% normal and part of the healing process.  24 hours after removing the bandage, baby can have a bath.

1 week after the Bris:

The penis is looking 100% better. The granulation is starting to peel off by itself and the skin underneath is seen. Some parents will have already forgotten about the Bris. The only thing that matters much now is getting some decent sleep! However some parents will continue to worry until the first grandchild is born. The yellowish granulation will remain on the head of the penis and at the sides for a week longer. On the site of the wound there will be a soft scab which will turn darker within the next week as the skin begins to form. This will become lighter and lighter as the skin gets thicker, until it matches the color of the rest of the skin.
